my friend carol has a garden and grows various vegetables. i guess if you grow carrots you want really soft soil, this allows the carrots to grow straight down. her soil is rocky, so the carrots grew around the rocks. thought that was neat. she gave me these two cuz they look like people. i painted the faces on them.

1.Name,age,location
I am Denise Kupferschmidt, I am 31 years old in 2 weeks, physically in Brooklyn, mentally somewhere in coastal Mexico.

2.Can you tell us about  the piece you sent?

Its part of a new series of drawings of Vases that I’ve been working on this year.  It’s sumi ink on book paper.  Vases are a sort of death-accessory, as urns or vessells, and so they go along with other series I’ve done that have a same association; I’ve been enjoying making them also because they are a designed object and thus I can really riff on the form.  I like this one a lot, it kind of looks like a snail.

3.Which “ship of fools” song do you prefer, The Doors or The Grateful Dead?

DOORS!  I watched a really great American Masters on them that was on Thirteen recently.  I highly recomend watching it, and it’s put me in the mood for them of late.  There was lots of clips from HWY, which I had never seen or known about.

4.Chevy Chase or Vince Vaughn?

If you found me wandering in the desert and offered me water or food and I could only pick one, I’d maybe have an easier time choosing.

5.Are you planning to see the new Basquiat documentary?

Yes I was talking about with some people the other day, and apparently it’s supposed to be really good, and we also talked about a new documentary about Phil Spector which sounds amazing! Crazy geniuses.

6.Favorite sport to watch?

Ping Pong

7.Do you think the war on drugs is “working”?

No way, because Mexico wouldn’t be as nuts right now if it was, because obviously it would be more difficult to get cocaine, but that shit is everywhere.  The War on Drugs is just another war on black people.

8.Who are the Three most influential painters to you?

Oh boy: Chris Ofili, Pablo Picasso, Joshua Smith.

9.What are your thoughts on your own mortality?

I think about death all the time, even when I’m not thinking about my own life ending.  All my artwork is ending up being about death even when I thought it wasn’t.  It’s not morbid, I think I’m just rather fascinated by the ideas surrounding it and have been scared of it since I was little and first realized that people die and what that means.  I’m an atheist, even though I miss the magic of believing in things, so I don’t believe in heaven or hell, and I know when I die that I will become atoms again, and maybe the atoms that were me for a little while will go on to be part of a tree, or part of a space shuttle, or a piece of paper that someone will make a drawing on.  It’s allright.

10. Who’s death affected you more, Rodney Dangerfield or Michael Jackson?

Michael Jackson, although both are great losses to the comedy world.
