Nudity Today might have been more accurately called Nudity This Minute or Nudity Right This Very Second. It’s a breezily made collection, an easily curated survey of a group of young photographers making art that involves images-in varying degrees of graphicness-of the naked human form. The artists featured in Nudity Today grew up amidst the changing moods and outlooks in photography that were engendered by a heady era that witnessed the explosion of the snapshot aesthetic, the birth of digital photography, and the proliferation of online networks and outlets for sharing and exhibiting images. As those things have shaped the means of photography, the continuing relaxation (or the decay, if that’s really the way you want to feel about it) of social mores has transformed its ends. So what we have running loose in the world is a veritable horde of emerging photographic artists who don’t mind getting nude, being nude, and doing things in the nude; models the same age who are just as-if not more-comfortable being undressed and performing for the camera; and democratically accessible tools of production and distribution. And so, voilà: A perfect storm of youthful boobs, butts, pussies, and dicks in a seemingly never-to-abate gust of photos.

Mat Brinkman returns to the presses with Heads Collider, a 48 page exploration of drawing and color. For this one Brinkman drew heads on a sheet of rice paper, using the bleed through on the following pages as the basis of new drawings. So each page in this fine tome uses 3 drawings for each page — before, during, and after phases. The effect is like pulsing animation in print. This is a limited edition of 1000 copies co-published with the fine Le Dernier Cri of Marseilles.

Your June update

Summer has arrived, and with it a slew of coverage for various PictureBox releases.
Let’s start it off with Gengoroh Tagame at the Huffington Post and Hazlitt. Both excellent interviews with the artist. And of course now until June 15 Tagame is exhibiting original art at Shoot the Lobster, NYC.

Meanwhile, Blutch was interviewed by Matt Madden over at Comic Book Resources.

Our Sun Ra book received a rave over at The Paris Review.

And Sammy Harkham is on video not only at the LA Review of Books (he did, after all, win the LA Times Book Prize) but also on French TV (fast forward to 4:19).

Meanwhile, now going to the printers is: Pompeii, World Map Room, and School Spirits. Look for those in September. Phew. Busy around these parts.

May 24th in Brooklyn

CF’s new book, MERE, will make its American premier Friday, 5/24 at Desert Island, Brooklyn (540 Metropolitan Ave).

Come on out from 7 to 9 pm and celebrate the release with C.F.

About MERE:

In 2012 C.F. began to produce a series of more than a dozen mini-comics, which he distributed via Twitter. Each mini-comic offered a take on, and expansion upon, a classic comic strip genre-from crime and sci-fi to punk and sex-all of them infused throughout by C.F.’s absurdist humor and loose improvisatory drawing. Those comics, along with unpublished art and photos, are collected here.

-Here’s Craig Thompson interviewing Blutch over at Boing Boing. This is a great interview — the best way to get to know Blutch, whose book So Long, Silver Screen, is out now. He’ll be here in North America soon enough!

-Jonny Negron is interviewed over here. Nice one.

-Brian Chippendale has had a whole slew of press for his new record, All My Relations. Here he is at The Quietus, Geek, Decibel, Tiny Mix Tapes. And here he is writing about his recent trip to Dubai.
