What you will see here is highly edited. The facts are: I went to Tokyo in July 2011 with Norman Hathaway, using the Tokyo Art Book Fair as a legit excuse. Both our entire beings were there for work. To sell books at the fair; to interview three different artists, two of them for an imminent book; to eat well, yet very cheaply; to see an artist I publish; to find buried treasure. Absent from this list was: to sweat like you’ve never sweated before; not sleep; drink. So, to keep it snappy I’m only going to show you 99% “business”. Here we go:
Yokoyama talking through his “gag manga” page. These are meant to be published in one color, but with “unfinished” image intact.
Gag Manga finished spread.
Layout for spread from his upcoming book.
Yokoyama claims this as his only manga influence, read when he was a kid in the 70s. Of course I forgot to write down the title or artist.
Met Tadanori Yokoo for 3 hour interview
Me and Yokoo
This blog is going to take you to school. You will learn about all things PictureBox: old dudes; obscure design; good painting; bad painting; dogs; annoying product endorsements. And so forth. All from me, Dan Nadel, your PictureBox host.

wow wow wow, Tanaami pointing to Black Pus is pretty choice,
what? no interview with Ryan Cecil Smith….. JK
Could that artist be Shigeru Sugiura?

I don’t know about the comic itself, but the story is called “かたさの選手権 (katasa no senshuken)” which translates as “Hardness Championship”(as in a title bout).
Wow you met Ebisu!!
My nickname in my childhood was Ebisu san,
because of my naturally curly hair same as him…
Are Picture Box planning to publish some Ebisu in the west? That would be rad…
When are the Yokoyama shirts going to be for sale? No, seriously.
i think they are just his own shirts he draws on.
Yep, and seemingly mostly worn by the man himself.
