So Wednesday night we had our screening of the film version of Cockfighter at Lincoln Center, with Monte Hellman in attendance. We had a great time — packed house, great vibe:
All good. Matt Sweeney played a mean guitar solo set after the film and really tore it up beautifully.

Things I learned:
-People REALLY like that movie. And they should. It’s amazing.
-The phrase “let’s free ball it”, coined by intro writer Jesse Pearson in reference to preparing for our brief public talk pre-screening. Last time I thought about free balling was 1994, and it had to do with the Washington DC metro system.
-I could watch Warren Oates do just about anything, for any amount of time, anywhere.
This blog is going to take you to school. You will learn about all things PictureBox: old dudes; obscure design; good painting; bad painting; dogs; annoying product endorsements. And so forth. All from me, Dan Nadel, your PictureBox host.

ZOMG! I saw Cockfighter at a SXSW screening in 2000 and it really changed the way I look at movies. The film is such a product of the time it was made in that it could never be made today. Even if you could put together the right actors and had the best CGI for the cocks, it just would not compare to the amazing real violence captured in that film. Holy shit THE SPURS! Plus there are just so many gems just hidden in there, like 19 year old Ed Begley Jr., skinny as a wax bean.
Glad to hear this film is still getting some play.
